Why Payment Flows Break

Payment integrations are among the most complex in a SaaS product. They involve asynchronous events, external state, retries, edge cases, and real money. They break in ways that are often invisible until they aren't.

Webhook events arrive out of order or not at all

Stripe sends webhooks at the speed of the internet, not the speed of your server. When your handler is slow, times out, or fails without returning a 200, Stripe retries sometimes creating duplicate charges, double upgrades, or silent failures that users never see.

Subscription state gets out of sync

A user cancels on Stripe but stays active in your database. A payment fails but the account keeps access. A plan upgrade goes through but the features don't unlock. Payment state and application state drift apart silently.

Edge cases in the payment flow that only appear with real users

Do you need access to our Stripe account?

We need access to your Stripe test environment to reproduce and diagnose issues. We request restricted API keys with read-only access to live data for audit purposes only. We do not need access to process or modify live payments.

Which payment providers do you work with?

We primarily work with Stripe subscriptions, webhooks, Stripe Checkout, Payment Intents, and the Stripe Customer Portal. We also work with Paddle and LemonSqueezy for SaaS billing. For other providers, contact us to confirm compatibility.

How do you price payment integration work?

Simple payment bug fixes start at $299 consistent with our Bug Fix Sprint pricing. Payment architecture reviews or full integration rebuilds are scoped after diagnosis. You approve the price before work starts.

Can you fix a payment flow that was built by someone else?

Yes. We work in codebases we didn't write. We start with the code review, Stripe dashboard audit, and webhook logs and trace the failure to its source regardless of who built it.

What if the issue only appears in production, not in test mode?

We use Stripe's test webhooks and Payment Intent test cases to reproduce most scenarios. For issues that only appear in live mode typically 3D Secure edge cases or bank-specific behaviors we diagnose from production logs and Stripe event data before recommending a fix.

How long does a payment integration fix take?

Simple webhook handler fixes take one to two days. Subscription state sync issues typically take three to five days. A full payment flow audit and refactor can take one to two weeks. We scope timelines after diagnosis.
